Freedom rods (long thin plastic strands compressed together) that fill the wood block, allows you to mix and match kitchen knives from different sets and to store practically any utensil easily - anywhere in the block. Just slide in your knife - the rods surround the knife on all sides to keep it snug and secure with friction. Plus the rods keep your knives sharper by eliminating the potential of scraping blades on the edges of traditional knife block sets. These rods dishwasher safe. Remove the freedom rods (they are attached at the bottom) and place the whole mass on the top rack of your dishwasher for cleaning. Use the shorter area of the block for smaller knives and utensils.
